BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (BHRT)
As we age, certain hormones in the body decline. These hormones are involved in many
day-to-day processes, leading to the body becoming less efficient. This results in changes such
as menopause and andropause (male menopause).
We strongly believe that a ‘one size fits all’ is not beneficial in women’s and men’s health, and instead, compounded hormones can help tailor treatments.
Currently, there is a lot of interest in Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). ‘Bio-identical’ indicates that the hormones are an exact match in molecular structure to the hormones produced by our bodies.
These hormones are typically derived from a plant source i.e. extracted from yams and soy.
Bioidentical hormones are micronized (finely ground) in the laboratory for better absorption in the body.
We formulate hormone capsules in the modified release (slow release) form unless specifically instructed by the doctor. Evidence has shown a modified release system will yield results closer to the body’s natural release of hormones.
Hormone levels are usually assessed via blood tests and then the dose adjusted according to a combination of test results and clinical response.
Como Compounding Pharmacy can provide Bio-identical hormones in several forms, such as pills, topical creams, troches, pessaries and injectables and infusions.
Benefits of BHRT:
Hormone fluctuations can cause mood swings due to hormonal interference with blood sugar and brain chemistry. Balanced hormones can remedy feelings of anger, anxiety, and depression.
Increased Muscle Mass:
Although male dominant hormones, deficiencies can occur in both men and women. Such a deficiency directly affects the building of muscle. If these hormone levels are too low muscle mass will decrease.
Muscle influences the burning of calories. When muscle is abundant, fat stores are tapped into in order to sustain energy.
If hormone levels are decreased, then desire for sexual activity is also decreased. When hormones are restored to normal levels, a patients libido improves.
Healthier Sleeping Patterns:
The body’s internal clock sets sleeping patterns and is located in the part of the brain known as the hypothalamus. Hormonal imbalances can interfere with signals in the hypothalamus and create disturbed sleep.
Supplementation of one hormone in particular, Melatonin, can promote slow wave sleep (regenerative sleep). Melatonin levels are abundant in healthy young adults and decline as we age.
Fluctuations of hormones can cause blood sugar to not be processed properly, and this can cause feelings of fatigue. When hormones are balanced, the body can effectively produce energy to restore and increase vitality.
Higher Bone Density:
Estrogen and testosterone influence the way bones absorb calcium. If the bones cannot properly absorb calcium, they become weak, which leads to osteoporosis. Balanced hormones can regulate calcium absorption to keep bones healthy and strong.
BHRT For Women:
Decreased Hot Flashes
The hypothalamus is the body’s internal thermometer. Hormonal deficiencies can cause disruption to signals directed at the hypothalamus, and this can result in hot flashes and night sweats as well as temperature intolerances.
Increased Skin Elasticity:
Collagen ensures the skins youth and elasticity. When the collagen bonds break apart, skin can appear dry or wrinkled. Vitamin C and estrogen influence the formation of collagen and help keep skin youthful.
Increased Vaginal Lubrication:
Vaginal tissue needs estrogen to be healthy. Low estrogen levels can cause vaginal dryness which can lead to increases incidences of urinary tract infections.
THE WILEY PROTOCOL
We are one of only two Australian compounding pharmacies licensed to provide The Wiley Protocol.
The Wiley protocol, developed by T.S. Wiley, aims to mimic the body’s natural sex hormonal cycles (in healthy youthful men and women). The Wiley Protocol is different from other hormone replacement therapies as it is biomimetic. Biomimetic is the process of mimicking the natural undulating or wavelike rhythms of the hormone blood levels in a normal menstrual cycle of a healthy young woman.
Hormones can play a key role in libido, energy, and immune function. Women’s hormones tend to have a natural rhythm in women over the course of their menstrual cycle, and by menopause, may be deficient.
The replacement of these hormones may assist in correcting loss of muscle tone, absent sex drive, or general lack of mental function.
The Wiley Protocol uses this natural rhythm of nature to establish the proper doses of bio-identical hormones that mimic the natural hormones produced by your body.
Wiley Protocol is multi-phasic rhythmic dosing, meaning that the topical creams and their amounts vary throughout the 28 day cycle to restore the hormone levels of a woman in her prime.
